Brave Frontier Team Building Strategy Guide

Team Building Guide

General team building

Team building isn't very difficult. Ideally you want your team to share a synergy with the leader, and then one healer. That is it. There is a list of farmable healers available to you in the farmable units list if you do not have a premium healer.
To being with, we will cover buffs. By "buffs" I mean anything that provides an increase in strength to your team.There are five types of buffs that can be applied to a unit:
  • Leader Skills
All units have a leader skill. This leader skill is what you want to build a squad around. These leader skills are additive and will stack on top of each other. All of the starter units, when leveled up and evolved will have +50% attack boost to their own element. Having two of these types mean that they will have +100% attack. Not only that, when you bring your starter to a 6* evolution, they will gain +10% hp to their same color as well, so when you bring two 6* starters, your squad will have +100% attack and +20% hp.
  • Spheres
Spheres are raw stat increases. They are applied directly to the unit. For example, if your unit has 1000 attack, you equip Famous Blade to it, it will now have 1050 attack. You can craft spheres and earn them through events. You can equip your units with spheres on the unit page.
  • Ore/Seal
These items are ELEMENT specific. They are used primarily for teams that have all one element in them. The ore increases attack of their element by 50% for three turns, while the seal is 50% defense. You can synthesize these in your town after you've reached the appropriate level.
  • Items
These are similar to ore and seals as they are items that you can synthesize at the appropriate level. There are various items that provide buffs such as Attack Potion and Defense Potion, while they are advantageous because they are not element specific, but, they are also weaker. These provide an increase to a stat, and only for one turn. They can be added on to increase your attack for killing the boss.
Items that provide the same type of buff do not stack. For example, you cannot use an attack potion and a brute elixir at the same time.
  • Brave Burst Buff
Some units, when using their Brave Burst(BB) or Super Brave Burst(SBB) will provide a stats buff. For example, Weiss, when using his BB will provide an increase to attack for three turns. Some units when they achieve their SBB will be able to do damage AND provide a buff, such as Vargas. SBBs such as these will apply the buff to the entire party first, then use the damage skill. Unfortunately, the buff does not apply to the user until the following turn. The turn count for the buffs also start on the turn after it has been used.
Brave Burst buffs of the same type do not stack with each other. Using two of the same type such as Weiss will only apply it once.

Types of Teams

  • Mono element
These teams focus on using one element across the whole squad. They take advantage of leaders that contain +25% or higher +ATK Boosts to their element when they are the leader (such as all the starters) generally you pair up with another leader of the same element with the same type of leader skill to maximize it. So if you picked Vargas  and wanted a mono red/fire team you would load up your team with your strongest units of the same color/element and pair with something like, another Vargas. This gives a huge offensive boost. The weakness to mono color team is that you are always at risk or being much weaker when you run into your counter element. Light/Dark are exceptions as they aren't really "weak" against anything because they are "strong" against their counter element anyways.

People who use mono color teams tend to have multiple mono color teams. It is always beneficial to have multiple mono color teams. For example, one could use a mono water team to beat fire sibyl because fire is weak against water 
For mono light/dark teams who do not have a premium dedicated healer, you can simply run whatever element has an advantage for that quest/dungeon.
Mono color teams are easy to build because you really can use filler monsters for the spots. Elemental advantage in brave frontier is quite strong.

Sample Farmable/beginner Mono element team:
Selena (lead)/Verica/Merith/Zephu/Ramia/Selena Friend lead.
Magress (lead)/Kikuri/Alice/Xenon/Altri/Magress friend lead

  • Rainbow/Multicolored teams
Named mostly for the leaders who require 5 or more elements present to trigger the +50% attack boost (IE: Michele, Tiara, Lodin, Lilith, Logan, Zelban) if you have one of these units and not enough of a mono colored team or don't want to run a mono colored team you can activate their leader skill.
For these teams you simply want to pick the strongest of each color and throw it on, if you do end up stacking a color make sure you have a friend lead that can give you the 5th color.
Rainbow teams offer more flexibility in terms of squad units as you can pick and choose your subs to fit the stage. They also have a lack of distinct weakness, since they cover almost all colors, but because of this, they also lack a distinct advantage.
There are some leads that are a raw power boost to all colors (20%, 30%) such as Shida, Amy, etc. These are usable if you do not have one of the stronger rainbow lead. They are non color discriminant, so you can have 2 thunder, 2 water, and 1 dark for example, and it will still work.
Sample Beginner/Farmable Rainbow team: Any of Michele's group that matches with your starter + Your starter + 3 other colors (1 should be a healer)

  • Spark teams
These teams focus on doing damage via the Spark mechanic. If you don't know what spark is, you should watch the tutorial video and get a free metal king while you're at it.
These teams focus highly on teams that spark really well and can spark very often. Leaders are monsters such as Rickel, Lubradine, and Behemoth. These are even more flexible than the rainbow teams because you do not need to fulfill a color requirement. However, it takes a little more skill to use as you need to know how to attack and when to attack to maximize your damage.
Sample Farmable Spark team:
Rickel lead/Serin/Cayena/Stya/Leon/ Omega Behemoth Friend Lead or Rickel lead.

  • Crit teams
Okay, this is basically Zebra/Zebra team leads. Equip all your monsters with increased critical chance spheres and go for it. All you are doing is hoping for crits, and making those crits massive damage. Very flexible in terms of squad units, leaders are NOT flexible at all. If you are doing this, you NEED to run Dual Zebra or other leads with the same skill.
There is no sample team, get your highest attack valued units and put it in here, equip them all with +crit spheres. If you have units that can buff crit with their BB such as Duel-GX, you really want to bring them. Other units that increase attack with their bb are also good to bring as well.

  • BB spam teams
This is the current hype'd team. Felneus is the best lead for this type of team. You want a team leader that will greatly fill your bb gauge each turn. Your next step is to fill your team with the highest hit count BBs you can find (douglas being the most popular, serin is another). This team functions on the fact that once you hit Felneus' SBB, you will have enough BC drops to consistently spam your BB over, and over, and over.
The optimal team setup in this is not flexible. But you can still use other units that have bb's or sbb's that increase BC drop rate to help with filling up the bb gauge. Any leader that has at minimum, a "large boost to BC drop rate" should be useable. Ideally you want "Huge boost".

Dark Elixir

The true power of Dark Elixir! Dark Elixir troops were into the game on the March 12th 2013 update. They are also extremely expensive to train for Dark Elixir is very hard to find. They can only be trained in the Dark Barracks.

The Troops

The Dark Elixir troops are stronger and more expensive than normal troops. Check out the strategies for using them in battle.

  • Golems are extremely powerful tanking units that, upon death, split into two smaller Golemites that continue to do damage.
  • Both Golems and Golemites do splash damage, similar to Balloons, when they die.
  • Golems target defenses first, like Giants and Balloons.
  • It is usually recognized as the strongest ground troop, but this is debated among fellow players.

Offensive Strategy
  • A good strategy is to release Golems and wait until all splash damage defenses like Mortars and Wizard Towers fire on them then release units like Archers and Barbarians.
Defensive Strategy
  • Golems, like Giants and P.E.K.K.As, are very high-health units that can be used to soak up fire. Make sure that the Golem is in the middle or in range of most of your defenses, as the Golem can distract attacking troops very effectively for a considerable amount of time. Even when overwhelmed, the Golem does a surprising amount of splash damage, enough to kill all Tier 1 and most Tier 2 troops (including lower-level Giants), as well as even Hog Riders. Any remaining attackers will then have to deal with the two Golemites as well.

Upgrade Differences
  • The Golem undergoes a significant graphic change at level 5.
    • At level 3, the Golem's rocky exterior changes shade from light gray to a darker gray.
    • At level 5, the Golem gains purple, crystal-like spikes, quite similar to those on the level 3 Wizard Tower and his entire body gains a purple/grey color.

  • Added in the 17 Apr 2013 update.
  • You can have a maximum of 8 Golems at one time in a full complement of fully upgraded Army Camps. This number increases to 9 if you include the 1 that can fit into a fully upgraded Clan Castle.
  • It is the only troop that splits in multiple units upon death.
  • Golems and Balloons are the only troops that deliver splash damage upon dying. This is in contrast to the Wall Breaker, which dies upon delivering splash damage.
  • Has a housing space requirement of 30, which is 5 spaces more than a P.E.K.K.A
  • The Golem is the only troop that can fill a level 5 Clan Castle by itself.

  • The Valkyrie is a fierce warrior maiden with flaming crimson hair, dressed in a long leather loincloth with matching leather brassiere and knee-high boots. She wields a massive double-bladed axe, which is about 1/2 of her size.
  • The Valkyrie has a total of 4 levels.
  • She takes up 8 spaces in an Army Camp.

Offensive Strategy
  • Drop the Valkyries near the Barbarian King at the start of an attack. These Dark Elixir Troops do a lot of damage on Heroes and are an easy way to get rid of the Barbarian King early; this makes the whole attack easier and more effective.
  • Using the Valkyrie against Clan Castle troops is a good idea, because they deal small area splash damage and will be able to take out groups of troops quickly and efficiently.
  • Try to refrain from using the Valkyrie in mass quantities at one location, as they will tend to bunch up around the outside of a well-defended base where Mortars and Wizard Towers will make short work of them.
Defensive Strategy
  • Valkyries are extremely powerful troops and can be a problem to deal with; they do a lot of damage and have quite a bit of health (although nowhere near as much as a Dragon or P.E.K.K.A). Although their damage has a splash component, it is short range and generally has no effect except when they are attacking Clan Castle troops (which they excel at) or Walls. While they do not have any particular weakness like P.E.K.K.As do with Hidden Teslas, they also do not have any unusual offensive capabilities either (like Hog Riders) so essentially the best defense against Valkyries is simply good base design.
  • Valkyries are wonderful Clan Castle troops. Their splash damage makes them extremely effective against large groups of lightly-armored, melee-range troops such as Barbarians and Goblins, though they are also very capable against groups of ranged troops such as Archers and even Wizards as well. On several occasions players have reported Valkyries to have single-handedly destroyed entire Goblin andBarbarian raids. She can only attack ground troops, however, and is completely ineffective against aerial units. Her high health also allows her to survive many hits.
  • The Valkyrie is particularly deadly when deployed among Barbarians as part of the Clan Castle complement; although she is a much more powerful troop, she is approximately the same size and can easily be missed in a group of Barbarians. Often it will take a few moments for the attacking player to notice her and understand why his or her ground troops are dying so quickly.

Upgrade Differences
  • The Valkyrie has the fewest upgrade differences of any unit.
    • At level 3, she changes her steel axe for a golden one.

  • As part of the 29 July 2013 update, the Valkyrie's damage has been increased.
  • While the Valkyrie has very high damage per second and hit points, she takes 15 minutes to train.
  • The Valkyrie has the same original face design as the Archer.
  • You can have a maximum of 30 Valkyries at one time in a full complement of fully upgraded Army Camps. This number increases to 33 if you include the 3 that can fit into a fully upgraded Clan Castle.
  • Some players refer to her as a P.E.K.K.A with no armor, because she is female and has extremely high damage per second and hit points.
  • The size of the Valkyrie is rather small and can easily be mistaken for a Barbarian or Archer.

  • The Hog Rider is a rugged, tanned man riding a large hog. He is bare-chested, wearing only a brown leather loincloth, a red belt and a pair of leather sandals. He has two large golden wristbands and a gold earring. His weapon of choice is a large war hammer.
  • His mount is a large boar/hog, about half its rider's height; the Hog Rider holds a brown leather bridle which is looped around the boar's tusks.
  • He is a mortal troop and can be created in multiple numbers like other normal troops.
  • Because of his hog he can jump over Walls, giving the user a great advantage over the enemy base.
  • Although he has high damage per second and high hit points, he only takes 2 minutes to train.
  • Hog Riders make good distractions when deploying other units such as Archers.

Offensive Strategy
  • He can be used to jump over any level Walls, rendering them ineffective against Hog Riders. Note that while this allows Hog Riders free access to what lies behind the wall, it does not open up gaps for other troops to move through. If the Hog Riders need the support of other ground troops, you will still need to deploy Wall Breakers in order to assist them.
  • The Hog Rider could potentially be used in a fashion similar to Barbarians, i.e. a "Hog Rider Rush", without requiring any Wall Breakers to break Walls. However, this would likely be a poor tradeoff of resources, as a large raid of Hog Riders would cost a significant amount of Dark Elixir.
  • Hog Riders are very capable of acting as distracting troops like Giants; they have nearly as much health as a similar-level Giant, move twice as fast and do considerably more damage.
  • When used all together they can be extremely effective offensive troops, though this is balanced by the fact that you must use a substantial amount of Dark Elixir.
Defensive Strategy
  • Defending against Hog Riders is tricky, as wall placement becomes irrelevant when dealing with them. However, the fact that they can jump over a Wall and attack a defense means that they may leave their ground support behind (Barbarians, etc.), as they will not be able to follow. This will allow your interior defenses to concentrate on the Hog Riders.
  • Although the Hog Rider is certainly not a liability on defense, the fact that all defensive troops are unimpeded by walls negates the primary advantage of the Hog Rider. As of the 30 Jul 2013 update, they take up the same amount of housing space (5) as Giants but are much faster and do considerably more damage. They are also much less susceptible to Lightning Spell attacks than Minions and Tier 1 troops, so they may be a good alternative for the Clan Castle if your clan mates don't mind donating Dark Elixir Troops.

Upgrade Differences
  • At level 3, the Hog Rider's hammer increases in size and turns black. The brass bands on the hammer's head disappear, replaced by a massive golden knob.
  • At level 5 his mohawk turns orange, making it similar to that of a level 5 Goblin.

  • Though the Hog Rider appears in many ways to be a mounted barbarian, unlike the Barbarian the Hog Rider's teeth appear to be in perfect condition and that he has dark, tanned skin.
  • He was added in the 12 March 2013 update. On 27 August 2013 his training time was reduced from 5 minutes to 2, and he was given a preferred target (defenses).
  • Hog Riders bounce in the air when their Army Camp is tapped.
  • You can have a maximum of 48 Hog Riders at one time in a full complement of fully upgraded Army Camps. This number increases to 54 if you include the 6 that can fit into a fully upgraded Clan Castle.
  • He is the only ground troop able to jump over Walls without using the Jump Spell.
  • They have a similar body build to the Barbarian.

  • The Witch is a powerful troop that can summon dead warriors from past battles (skeletons). She is used as a support troop (similar to the way the Healer works) and when used correctly, can wipe a battlefield with ease. 

Offensive Strategy
  • As she has low hit points, the Witch is recommended as a support troop, and should be placed near the back of an attack. Don't group Witches together or a Mortar may wipe them all out. The witch has a longer range than an Archer or Wizard, so she can fight behind archers without being attacked. Plus the witch's skeleton are good tanks to attract the attention of defense buildings.
  • Drop a couple of Giants as distractions, with a few Wall Breakers shortly after. Then add 1-3 Witches and they will spawn skeletons to help the Giants. When the Giants and Witches finish destroying the defenses, drop 1-4 additional Wall Breakers (depending on level) along with 1-4 Witches and moreGiants.
  • The Witch's skeletons can help Giants destroy buildings.
  • The Witch's skeletons can easily overwhelm defenses, though splash-damaging buildings (Mortars andWizard Towers) can wipe them out just as easily as they can be raised.
  • If you have strong enough Lightning Spells, take out one or two Mortars at the start of the raid. This will greatly decrease the base's splash damage capability. More skeletons will then stay alive longer acting as a distraction for the defense and will let your stronger troops take care of the rest.
  • If you see a Witch on defense, a single Lightning Spell is a convenient option to prevent wave after wave of skeletons continually distracting your offensive troops.
Defensive Strategy
  • When using Witches as part of your Clan Castle complement, place the Clan Castle behind walls to protect her from being drawn out and killed easily.

Upgrade Differences
  • Currently, the Witch has the fewest available levels of any troop (two); every other troop has at least four, and most have five or six levels. It is highly likely that Supercell will add more levels in future updates.
  • There is no difference in appearance between the two levels. Currently the Witch is the only troop with no upgrade differences.

  • The Witch has approximately the same amount of health as a Wizard of similar level.
  • Although she appears to have no feet, which makes it seem like she is levitating, she is actually aground troop and will not be attacked by Air Defenses.
  • In terms of health and damage output, the skeletons that the Witch summons are slightly stronger than a level 6 Archer. However, the skeletons have no ranged attack.
  • You can have a maximum of 20 Witches at one time in a full complement of fully upgraded Army Camps. This number increases to 22 if you include the 2 that can fit into a upgraded Clan Castle.
  • Only a certain amount of skeletons can be on the battlefield at the same time (see table below for details). 
  • Although summoned skeletons look very similar to Wall Breakers, they are more likely to be Barbariansbecause they have a similar look, stance and attacking style.
  • If you observe carefully, the Witch looks similar to the Archer, only much more "zombified".

There are certain tips and tricks that can help you win more often in Nimble Quest. This page lists some tips that might help.

Tips and Tricks

  1. If you kill the first enemy in a line of enemies, the entire line will be killed. Similarly, if you kill the second enemy in the line, the second and third enemies will be killed.
  2. It can be helpful to aim for the head of lines of enemies, but keep in mind that the leader of your party will be more vulnerable to the attacks of those enemies. Sometimes it's better to attack from behind.
  3. Don't be greedy: if you don't need a powerup or gem, you might want to leave it alone. Getting the powerup or gem could lead you into a group of enemies that will defeat you.
  4. Try different positions and formations. Sometimes it works well to loop around the center of a playing field and keep your enemies stuck to the edges. Sometimes it's better to stay in a corner and clear away the enemies in that area before moving on to a different corner. And sometimes it is good to stay in a long line that weaves back and forth.
  5. If you stay in the center, it is a little more likely that an enemy will drop a bomb in the center, which will get rid of more enemies than a bomb dropped near the wall.
  6. In the early stages, stay near the center, only going far enough to see the edge of the playing field before turning. This is the most efficient way to search the whole playing field for enemies. In later stages, the playing field may be too crowded to allow you to stay in the center.
  7. Be careful with the speed buff. Going more quickly lets you defeat more enemies in a shorter amount of time, but it can be harder to control, so you might find it harder to avoid crashing into walls. Also, when the playing fields get very crowded (such as in Courtyard 2 and beyond), the speed buff can make it more difficult to avoid hitting enemies. You can't turn the speed buff off once you have it, so beware!
  8. When your leader has a shield, the shield will disappear if the hero crashes into an enemy, but the enemy will be killed. Also, if the leader has a shield and crashes into a wall, the shield will disappear and the hero will turn left or right, surviving the crash.
  9. If you get a treasure chest but no magnet, go toward red gems and blue gems to get the best value from the chest.
  10. To survive the later stages, your group needs to have a high damage per second, so be careful to minimize deaths of the heroes following you. Always collect potions. And avoid stepping into large groups of enemies if possible, where it's likely that you will lose many party members as enemies crash into them. Try to weave back and forth to keep all of your heroes closer together. This way your attacks will be concentrated to a smaller area, enabling you to more quickly kill the nearby enemies.
  11. In later stages, try to eliminate healers, bats, and rats as soon as possible. The healers make it take longer to kill enemies, which can be fatal because so many enemies are spawned in such a short amount of time, making the playing field dangerously crowded. Bats and rats should also be dealt with quickly because they make it much more likely that you will lose some of your heroes when they crash into your line.
  12. Heroes can be leveled up instantly if you tap the plus star button to the right of the hero's stars and pay the specified amount of gems. The level up cost is reduced by 2 gems for every enemy that that hero defeats when that hero is the leader. To level up your heroes as quickly as possible, focus on leveling up one hero at a time and keep that hero as your leader until he/she has leveled up. Then collect as many gems as possible and go as far as possible through the stages as you can each time you play.
  13. It takes a long time to collect enough gems and defeat enough monsters to upgrade a hero to level 3. When deciding which heroes to level up to 3, choose carefully based on what stat boost the hero will get at level 3 , then focus only on that hero until you've leveled him or her up. The stat boost that the hero gets will make it easier to progress to the advanced stages, which means that you will be able to defeat lots of enemies in a short amount of time, which means that it might take less time to level up your next hero.
  14. You can get free tokens by watching advertisement videos. You can do this by going to the shop and tapping Get Gems and Tokens in the bottom right corner, then tap Free Tokens under the tokens tab. You can also see this screen if you have no tokens and try to purchase something that requires tokens, then tap the get tokens button. Just wait for the video to be over, look for the X button to close the video (sometimes you have to wait for it to appear), and then you will get your free token. Be aware that the number of free token offers per day is limited, so sometimes the game will tell you that there aren't any free token offers right now.
